On August 22nd, Iraq’s Constitutional Committee is due to submit its draft Constitution to the Iraqi National Assembly. Many Iraqi women’s groups fear that the Constitution may give more power to Islamic law to decide many issues that are critical to women such as freedom of movement and travel, property inheritance, or child custody. In some cases, certain interpretations of Islamic law could subject women to forced early marriage, polygamy, compulsory religious dress, domestic violence, or more rarely, execution by stoning as punishment for adultery. Once in place, the new Constitution will have a resounding and long-lasting influence on Iraq’s future.
